Magic didn’t come out of a vacuum in Pyron. The Magi of Myraea were not the first to discover it, but rather were the first to codify it into a sort of science. Prior to the rise of the Magi, magic was practiced by humans in an intuitive and largely accidental way. Some individuals, with strong enough minds, were able to shape mana without realizing what they were doing. Often these basic spells, crude as they were, were lauded as miracles and gifts granted by the gods. There was no method for casting spells, no safety precautions, no understanding of how magic functioned, and no reliable way to transmit knowledge regarding magic to a new generation of casters.

In all truth, one of the things I hate the most in a role-playing experience is coming up with a cool idea, and being told “No, you can’t, the rules don’t allow for it”. So far as I’m concerned, RPGs are games of escapism and creativity, and rules that seek to restrict what a player can do, at all turns, go against those ideals to me.
The Spring is the center of Pyron’s economic and political world. Through the Spring, Meridian gains access to the sole source of physical mana in the world. The Spring is the home of the Corpse Cult, a deadly and powerful sect of Magi and Revenants. The Spring allowed Meridian to rise above the waves of the Drowned Lands, and provided the impetus for the founding of the city. Without the Spring, Myraea could not have conquered the continent, nor forced its foothold on Suri. Without the Spring, life would be very different on the continent.
Characters in Pyron heal very slowly on their own. Without the Fast Healer character trait, they heal a hit point every other day. This can be sped up a bit through the use of the field surgery, alchemy, or medicine skills, depending on the type of wound/injury the character’s suffered. The only real way to rapidly heal damage, however, is through magical healing.
The discovery of magic is, without question, the greatest discovery in the history of Pyron. It is through magic that the Myraean Empire came to exist, and through magic that Meridian survived the flood waters of the Cataclysm. Magic is integral to the way of life enjoyed across the continent, and vital to its defense against Surese aggression.
